How Covid-19 Has Affected The Plastics Industry

How Covid-19 Has Affected The Plastics Industry: During the Covid-19 pandemic, the demand for Perspex has risen massively. From those starting on those DIY projects at home, to protecting staff with sneeze screens. We are now seeing more than ever the need of plastics to keep people safe. Explore how Covid-19 has affected the plastics industry below.

Perspex Screens

Now, in addition to protective masks, visors and gowns, plastic screens and dividers are now common place. Not only in hospitals, care homes and retail stores, but also offices, schools and more. These screens are vital for taking care of those on the front line, providing an additional layer of protection. Easy to clean, screens allow those who cannot work at home to go back to work and feel safe. Suppliers and fabricators all over the country were rolling out screens to businesses and individuals. Giving them reasonable income in an uncertain time.

Home Renovation & DIY

Due to lockdown restrictions and many workers being furloughed, this saw an increase in DIY projects in homes across the country. 71% of British people completed DIY projects around the home during lockdown. Whether it was creating a bar, finishing those annoying jobs or adding some fresh colours to your home. With more people than ever shopping online, this also puts pressure on suppliers to set up online stores. Creating a safer environment and keeping more people safe.

It is not only the plastics industry that has seen a hit during the pandemic. All trades and suppliers including timber has seen a surge in demand for materials. Both for personal and commercial projects, the safe working and furlough schemes put the breaks on production for months.

This demand on materials has effected the industry greatly. Due to the lack of raw material and the increased need, the industry cannot keep up. Also, due to social distancing, furlough and those who have been effected by Covid, this brings down workforce numbers. With many suppliers seeing delays, this can create huge problems for consistent business. In addition to price increases, this has seen many companies struggling or even shutting down. With those supplying to hospitality and retail taking a huge hit.

The ongoing pandemic has also effected many people’s views on sustainability and single use plastics. With the nature of the virus and its ability to live on surfaces, these single use items are needed more than ever. Such as testing kits, PPE and masks, the past year has stumped recycling and our need to reduce our plastic use. With social settings being restricted and mask wearing being the new normal. This increase in plastic waste is seen by many to be a step backwards on the sustainability front.
